Recording (or sometimes called Tracking) is the process of getting your band or voice on tape by use of sound sources and microphones. Depending on the situation, each separate microphone can be recorded to a separate track on the recorder so you have full control of the individual sound in the mixing process.
Once all the music is recorded, mixing is the next process. It consists of blending all the individual tracks recorded and reverb/effects to a stereo (Left & Right) or 5.1 (home theater surround) file.
Mastering consists of a series of processes which include final equalization, multi-level compression, level matching, de-noising, and P & Q sub coding to Red Book Standard. It is one of the most misunderstood and misused applications in the recording process.
